What is a Mezzanine floor?

A mezzanine floor, derived from the Italian word “mezzano” (meaning middle), serves as an extra level situated between the primary floors of a building. This versatile addition finds valuable use in various settings including retail, office, and warehouse spaces.

In industrial applications, mezzanine flooring represent semi-permanent structures integrated within buildings. Constructed between two permanent original stories, these systems are typically freestanding and, in many instances, can be disassembled and moved to a different location.

Main Uses:

MPC Systems specialises in installing mezzanine floors for businesses across the Midlands and the UK, catering to a diverse range of sectors. When feasible within the existing structure, it serves as an ideal solution for increased space. Some of the most common uses consist of:

 – Storage Mezzanines – Supplemental storage within a warehouse, specialised item storage and integration with racking systems.

Office Mezzanines – Additional workspace for employees, meeting areas or break rooms, file storage and control rooms.

Retail Mezzanines – Expanding the shop floor space, incorporating stockroom areas and storage for specialised items.

Warehouse Mezzanines – Adding extra storage or dedicated storage areas, internal offices, or spaces for picking and packing.

FAQS

How Long Does it Take to Install?

The time it takes depends entirely on the size of the platform and whether you opt for additional features. The variables are endless. So if you’d like to find out how long it could take please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Do You Need Planning Permission?

Planning permission is not usually required. Mezzanine floors have no impact on the structure of a building. So no formal permission is necessary. But they are subject to Building Regulation Approval. Therefore, it’s always best to check with your local authority before starting work in your facility.

Is A Fire Rating Required?

If your mezzanine flooring occupies less than 50% of the ground floor plan, is less than 20m in either width or length and is single-tiered and being used for storage, a fire rating is unnecessary. Only when your mezzanine floors exceed these specifications or are being used for anything other than storage, is a fire rating required.

What is The Weight Capacity of A Mezzanine Floor?

Mezzanine floors can typically hold between 360 kg and 4,000 kg per square metre. However, the weight capacity has multiple factors and cannot be easily specified. You should consider:

  • What your floor is being used for
  • The height and size of your mezzanine floor
  • Whether it requires structural or access support
  • The type of load (dead, live, universal, or point loads)
  • The building’s floor material and level

Please refer to the British Standard BS 6399 for recommended weight load guidance.

Do They Require Maintenance?

Regular maintenance is required, like any floor or storage space. Simply wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth or mop, and vacuum if necessary. You can also apply grit during the colder months if your flooring is not anti-slip.

Can Mezzanine Floors be Easily Relocated or Modified?

Yes they can be easily relocated or modified providing you or the project team have the original documents.
